HDR & Brightness Reality

DisplayHDR 400 is the tier to be sceptical about, and this panel shows why. It peaks at 400 cd/m2, contrast is 1200:1, and there is no local dimming - so an HDR signal will be accepted and displayed, but you will struggle to see a real difference against SDR. Some games even look worse in HDR mode on panels like this. The panel's genuine strengths are its 210 Hz refresh and 95% DCI-P3 colour; treat the HDR badge as marketing and leave it switched off.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Can I connect a PS5 or Xbox Series X? +
You can, but you lose the best of it. The HDMI ports are 2.0b, not 2.1, so 4K120 is out - you would be limited to 4K60 or 1440p at reduced refresh. For a console, look for a monitor with HDMI 2.1.
02 Is the DisplayHDR 400 badge worth anything? +
Honestly, no. With 400 cd/m2 peak and 1200:1 contrast and no local dimming, HDR content will display but look barely different from SDR. Buy this for the 210 Hz and the colour coverage instead.
03 Why does everyone recommend a VESA arm with this monitor? +
Because the stand only tilts. There is no height adjustment and no swivel, so unless your desk height happens to suit you, the screen will sit too low. It takes a standard 100 x 100 mm arm and only weighs 4.4 kg.
04 What is missing compared with pricier 1440p monitors? +
Three things, and they are all outside the panel. There is no height adjustment or swivel (tilt only), no speakers, and no USB hub - and the HDMI ports are 2.0b rather than 2.1. The panel itself, at 210 Hz with 95% DCI-P3, is the part MSI spent the money on.
05 What GPU do I need for 210 Hz? +
For esports titles like CS2 or Valorant, a mid-range card will get you close to 210 fps at 1440p. In demanding single-player games you will land far lower, but AdaptiveSync keeps it smooth.
